The Maris Show

My name is Damaris. I like to make things sometimes. I love to sing and dance. I don't read books...I devour them. I live in a hot, hot desert. I am addicted to lip gloss and magazines. I'm a graphic designer...when I want to be. I love writing stories, and making people laugh. Thunderstorms are comforting to me. Fashion makes my heart race. My dearest wish is to have a dog.

“Are you sure this movie was created in 2010?” Said the other Stabbington brother, in disbelief.   “And they think we’re the bad guys of this movie?  Talk about underrepresentation.”

“Well if you or Gothel are interested in reading more about it, I found a really good tumblr discussion about this entire issue,” said the first Stabbington brother.

(*POC: Person or People of Color)

but seriously tho

even though Tangled had a cute story and amazing art

for a movie that was made in like what? 2010? 2011? It is incredibly unsettling knowing that there was not a single POC.

idk- story time

Little Bangladeshi girl I used to babysit- she’s got dark brown skin and curly black hair and she owns this blond wig you know? And when ever she feels “ugly” (which is most of the time which breaks my heart) she puts on that blond wig so she can feel pretty again. She got that wig after she watched Tangled. She was so distressed by the fact that she was nothing like Rapunzel (or anyone in that whole movie) or all the other girl focused movies where the leads are always white ( with exception to Tiana, Mulan, Pocahontas and Jasmin) with long straight hair- that she got that wig so she could console herself with the fact that she isn’t “white girl pretty” as she likes to call it.

It’s the same bullshit I grew up with and internalised. There is an 18 year age gap between the two of us and I shit you not, the perceptions of beauty and what it means to be beautiful have not changed at all. Only difference is where I used to put powder all over myself to look white, she’s got a blond wig.

I know there’s gonna be people out there who say “it’s just disney! it’s just a kids movie! you’re an adult so you have no say”

Yeah, it is fucking Disney. If you knew about the history of Disney, it’s loaded with racism. The kids movie bit also turns to shit because what- aren’t our POC babies not worthy of being called kids? Aren’t they deserving of having kids shows that have folks who look like them in it? These things matter- believe me, they do.

As for the adults comment- that is actually really fucking scary that it is adults who make this. It’s adults who have a say in what kids can watch. And the adults who made this movie made it pretty darn clear that POC weren’t good enough for kids to watch in this movie. Or that POC kids aren’t deserving of a diverse viewing experience.

:/

man one of my biggest problems with people who are like ‘omg stop complaining it’s not like kids will notice’

kids DO notice

shit, i noticed

and my friends all noticed too.

why do you think i got told to be jasmine or pochahontas when we played around w/ that shit when i wanted to be snow white? because kids notice. they looked at snow white in all her lily-white fucking adorable-ass glory and looked at me and saw some frizzy-haired brown bitch and they’re like, ‘nope.’

kids can develop massive complexes over this shit. little white girls start acting like they’re better because they get the quote-unquote cool princesses and little poc girls feel like shit that they don’t look like the ‘good’ princesses.

so while it may not be the most important thing ever omg in terms of race relations, it does have an effect so can we please stop pretending it doesn’t ok yes thank you.

okay i’d take this a lot more seriously without that ugly-ass graphic

in here poc are mad because they have no one to identify with in a disney movie,

boohoohooo how sad now shut up. Te story is based on Rapunzel by the Grimm Brothers and just so you know it takes placed in germany during the middle age. There werent that many people of colour during that time now were there?

Now stop fucking complaining, im so sick of all the THERE ARE NO BLACK PRINCESSES I AM SO SAD BOOHOO, when there are a lot of colour princesses but you decide to ignore them because she is not “truly black”. And when you DO get a black princess you get mad because she cooks

nice one there guys

fuck you

Wow guess what! Tangled is the only Disney movie to pass the Bechdel Movie Test! Do you know what that means? It’s the only movie Disney has made where two woman talk about something other than men for more than two minutes! It’s the only one! That seems PRETTY PROGRESSIVE CONSIDERING

(wtf why am I on this feminist kick, today? I blame the class I’m in.)

AND ALSO IT TAKES PLACE IN GERMANY?

That’s like saying, why are there no white people in Mulan? HOW DARE YOU, DISNEY. HOW DARE YOU.

And y’all wonder why so many WOC give white feminists the side eye when the claim to be allies. Here’s a great example of one completely ignoring any legit criticism about race & agreeing with a bigoted troll to boot. Good job!

Are you kidding me… Do you know how to read? Or were you just going to disagree with me anyway because I wasn’t agreeing with this post?

I am all for equality with EVERYONE, not just in race, but every human being, but to argue about a children’s movie that is, aesthetic-wise, historically correct— no.

My point was that it’s silly to point this out when Disney has done movies with other races in it. Princess and Frog, being one— which is a fantastic movie— still doesn’t pass the Bechdel Movie Test— but had the first Disney princess that wasn’t caucasian. It’s progressive in that sense. Mulan was progressive in showing a STRONG female lead and was the first (and only) asian themed movie. Same with Pocahontas. Still didn’t pass the Bechdel Movie Test— That at least we DID get a movie from a company that is so influential on our children— that was actually passed it. It’s progressive in a completely different way WHICH ISN’T BAD.

And so what if they are white? If you are upset about that, that actually makes you a racist. I didn’t care that there was a movie with a mostly POC cast of characters and the only white people were portrayed as kind of dumb. In fact, I wasn’t even noticing that until just now. Still doesn’t bother me. BECAUSE WE’RE ALL HUMAN.

So you can go ahead and be condescending, just know it makes you look like a bigot because you’re the one pointing out race and assuming that just because I am white and just because I am a woman who wants equal rights, that makes me fucking ignorant.

You are unbelievable.

“because we’re all human”

apparently that doesn’t mean that you can take race out of the factor bc i actually want to see a Disney film where poc are actual role models (except for Mulan BUT THAT’S NOT FEMINIST APPARENTLY BECAUSE IT DIDN’T PASS THE BECHEDEL TEST WAAAAH)

want equality? learn intersectionality. learn how woc are affected in mainstream movies such as this. great, i got a movie in which a role model is my colour, just once. once in disney. the rest? naaaah fuck that shit that’s always going to be white and if it’s not, it’s historically accurate. since when does disney actually care about historically accurate things? pocahontas was not representative of first nations AT ALL. For a worldwide industry that caters to so many, for fucking once I want to talk about race being a factor in disney movies without someone bawwing about how it’s just a movie. It’s not just a movie when every damn thing shows a people that is my colour as being a) exotically seductive, b) a terrorist, c) a taxi driver, or d) someone with an indian accent and doesn’t understand sex.

but you know being progressive only matters when it’s for women and not of women of colour

so yes, you are not being progressive. congrats! maybe it’s just a movie for you, but after seeing hundreds upon HUNDREDS of movies where I am showcased as just a stereotype, it’s not just a movie for me. Sometimes PoC need to have multilayered characters, gasp! Who knew?

Multilayered characters?! You don’t say! I for one LOVE seeing my culture (if it’s ever represented at all) boiled down to cleaning ladies that barely speak english. It gives me a real sense of self-worth.
